Swingers: Human Nature or Dirty Secret? (In-class #2)

The concept of swingers is obviously a hugely controversial issue in the dating world and society as a whole. Biology implies that people and animals often have multiple partners, and some scientists suggest this is due to the desire to reproduce. But what does biology say about having mulitple sexual partners that one has no intentions to reproduce with? For those who don't know, swingers are people (often in committed relationships) who have sexual relations with other couples or other individuals. In certain instances, both individuals in a relationship are "swingers" but sometimes one partner is oblivious to the other's secrets. Our group discussed the questions: is being a swinger acceptable?,what gender is more likely to contribute to this type of behavior?, and do you think most swingers would participate in sexual acts with just heterosexuals and homosexuals or do they show a preference? Our group ultimately decided that men are more likely to be swingers. We came to this assumption because men consider casual sex more acceptable while women seem to display more behaviors that imply romance and commitment is a necessity before sex. All members of our group also agreed that married couples or domestic partners should NOT partake in these activities while people who are dating could, as long as both individuals in the relationship agreed. What are your thoughts?

  1. I personally believe that it is only wrong if you are hurting someone else. So if you are in a committed relationship with someone and he/she expects you to remain monogamous with him/her, you should respect that. If both of you agree that you can play around, then that's your choice.

Also people have learned that sex is nothing to be ashamed of. You are not a whore if you like sex, you're human. Just Be safe and smart about it. [David]
